Netflix’s Wednesday is coming back for more supernatural-infused mystery: the streaming platform has renewed the show for Season 2, TVLine has learned.

Series co-creator Miles Millar previously opened up about exploring more of the Addams Family dynamic pending a renewal. “We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles,” he told TVLine. “The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”

But the series is called Wednesday, so they “really want to focus the show on Wednesday.” However, they “definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”

Jenna Ortega Reacts to ‘Wednesday’ News

Jenna Ortega celebrated the renewal of her hit show Wednesday on Sunday (January 8), as she showed up at a pre-Golden Globes party in an outfit similar to her character’s Nevermore Academy schoolgirl uniform.

She was joined by her Wednesday co-star Emma Myers, who plays her werewolf roommate Enid in the hit series.

Jenna Ortega Reveals Her Major Hopes For Wednesday Season 2 at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards

The star of Netflix’s Wednesday said she’s already thinking ahead to season two of the mega-popular horror comedy, in an exclusive interview with E! News on the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet.

“I think, me personally, I would love to see the series get a little bit darker,” Jenna said, “and embrace the horror aspect a little bit more. They just started to get a writers’ room together,” but has “no idea” the direction the show will take in season two.

Ortega also revealed her thoughts on how Gaga could fit into a potential season 2 plot, after TikTok users re-popularized the pop star’s 2011 song “Bloody Mary” by editing it over a dance sequence the Addams Family adaptation.

“I’m sure Netflix would love that. Ortega told Variety ahead of the ceremony, after a reporter asked what role might be ideal for Gaga in season 2. “I think Mrs. Thornhill and Wednesday had this weird mentor relationship or kind of understood each other in a certain way. So, if Lady Gaga were to be a part, I think it would have to be two monsters that understand each other.”

Jenna Ortega: Wednesday is bidding adieu to love and hello to ‘horror’ in season 2!

Jenna Ortega revealed that any potential romance between Wednesday and her Nevermore Academy pals is officially dead as a doorknob as the supernatural series’ pivots toward “a lot more bolder” and “dark” direction for its season 2.

“I just got a couple of the outlines for the first couple of episodes so it’s still very much coming together and things like that,” she said about the season during Variety’s Actors on Actors interview with Elle Fanning. “We’ve had a lot of conversations and I think we’ve decided things that we definitely want to enhance or dive a little bit deeper in…”

Fanning interjected, “Things that you, specifically, want to bring, too?”

“Yeah, I think we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more because it is so lighthearted and I think a show like this, with vampires and werewolves and super powers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously,” Ortega explained. “I think that we’re kind of ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”

Jenna Ortega, who serves as a producer on the upcoming season, has often shared her disdain for the love triangle that brewed between Wednesday, Tyler (Hunter Doohan), and Xavier (Percy Hynes White) during its first season.

“Now that Tyler’s off the table, I feel like she’s off boys for a while,” she told costar Emma Myers during an MTV News interview last year. “I feel like her and Xavier are just getting to a safe place. I think there’s an opportunity there for a really sweet platonic relationship, because I don’t think it’s shown often enough, men and women having safe platonic relationships that don’t become romantic and are just genuine, almost sibling-like relationships. I think that’d be wonderful to see between her and Xavier.”

During her conversation with Fanning, Ortega praised the show’s “incredible female leads” and said that she’d “die to work with Gwendoline Christie” again in season two. Christie starred as Principal Weems, who — spoiler alert — died at the end of the first season.

“Wednesday’s relationship with Weems is one of my favorites. Because they’re very, very different women and they’re constantly against each other. But, simultaneously, they both want to watch each other’s successes and support them. Which is such a fascinating dynamic,” Ortega said. “Gwendoline, being as talented as she is, is just really, really a pleasure to work with. So I’m doing everything in my power to throw the most insane plots that would possibly bring this woman back from the dead. I’m trying!”

She concluded, “It would be a shame to go on without her.”

On Season 1

Season 1 followed Wednesday’s attempts to get a handle on her emerging psychic ability. While also trying to stop a monstrous killing spree and solve a 25-year-old mystery involving her parents. The finale revealed that — SPOILER ALERT — Tyler, a hyde, had been manipulated by Ms. Thornhill (Christina Ricci) into the local slayings as part of an elaborate revenge plot.

Wednesday has dominated Nielsen’s U.S. weekly ranking of original series for the past three cycles. In its first week (and with just a few days of eligibility), it amassed just shy of 6 billion minutes viewed (across a mere eight episodes). A feat that has only been bested by the 7.2 billion minutes that Stranger Things 4 drew last Memorial Day weekend (for 32 available episodes). In its second week, Wednesday grew its Nielsen tally to 11.3 billion minutes. Second only to the 12.3 billion minutes that Stranger Things racked up in the first two weeks after Season 4’s release. At at last count, Wednesday had added another 3.3 billion minutes viewed to its haul.
