Lacey Chabert and Will Kemp star on The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango, a new movie premiering Friday, June 2 at 9/8c on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. We at Survived The Shows had the great pleasure of chatting with Will Kemp, ahead of the premiere, and discuss his involvement in the making of the movie and what can fans expect from it. Check out the full interview in the video below!

What’s been the main element in The Dancing Detective and Sebastian’s character that fascinates you the most and drew you to join this project?

WILL KEMP: This project is very, very close to me because it’s a project that I co-created with the writer Aubrey Day. We were talking about this for about 3 years – now I’m an executive producer on this, and I’m also starring in it. So it’s a very personal project that I’ve been a part of for actually nearly three years. To make it was an absolute joy and a wonderful opportunity to visit Malta, which was a wonderful part of the world.

What makes The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango unique is that of the clue is in the title. It’s a murder mystery story, but it also involves a little bit of dancing, and it’s a fresh spin on the murder mysteries that they do at Hallmark. It has a lot of comedy, and that’s the thing I love about the character I play, Sebastian Moore.

He is a dancer and an actor who maybe hasn’t worked on stage for quite a while, maybe isn’t quite as famous as he thinks he is, but very enthusiastic in becoming a detective and helping Lacey Chabert’s character Detective Bailey with a case where she has to go undercover convincingly in a dance competition. So I guess he teaches her how to dance, one, but two, he gets to play a TV detective. It’s a lot of fun and I’m very excited for everyone to see the film.

How was it like for you to build this relationship both on and off screen with Lacey Chabert?

WILL KEMP: Well, Lacey and I – This will be our third movie together for Hallmark. I love working with Lacey. She’s such a lovely person. We have a wonderful trusting relationship on and off screen. We’re good friends. But creating this with her and when she said that she would love to do it, it was wonderful because Lacey just jumps in both feet. She’s fearless, and we’d already done Christmas Walls, so we had danced together before. This was three years ago now, or possibly more. So I knew that she would love this.

We got the same choreographer, Jean Marc Generu, who taught us the waltz, and now we do the foxtrot and the tango. And there’s also another element, which I won’t spoil but I’m very proud of: It is a really fun sequence in the movie where we get to dance. We were able to put as much dance in it as possible and hopefully we get the opportunity to do more of these. The trick and the challenge will also be that we’ve been a great mystery, a fun pairing but also with dance for entertainment sake.

Do you have any other upcoming projects in the works that you can share with us?

WILL KEMP: Oh, I do. I just got off the film in Utah, Mythica Storm Band, which was with a great director, Jake Stormy, and who’s the good friend. And we had a great time. I love the mythical world. I love the fantasy world, with witches, goblins and magic, and any chance I get this sort of dress up in a period cloak or costume or have crossbows, axes or something like that, I love but that’ll be coming out later on. And then I do have another project with Disney Plus that I can’t say too much about but will be announced very soon. You’ve probably seen things online as well with a very well-known Turkish and Italian star.
