Adapting the work of one of the literary matriarchs of gothic fiction for television isn’t easy but AMC’s Mayfair Witches succeeds in delivering a charming and intriguing show that perfectly embodies the spirit of Anne Rice’s storytelling, despite some changes from the source material like the creation of a new character out of the combination of two characters from the books, Michael and Aaron: Ciprien Greeve, played by Tongayi Chirisa.

We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Tongayi Chirisa about his experience in the making of AMC’s Mayfair Witches and what fans can expect from Ciprien Greeve’s arc. Check out full interview below!

What’s been the main element in Ciprien’s character and the show in general that fascinates you the most and also drew you to join Mayfair Witches?

TONGAYI CHIRISAWell, I think just being on a platform like AMC where they’ve had massive, massive hit shows – you know, Better Call Saul, Walking Dead, etcetera, etcetera. It was a no brainer to want to be a part of that family. So very grateful for that.

But also just to be a part of a massive franchise in the likes of Anne Rice’s storytelling and her books and her being one of our matriarchs of the vampire genre. So just to be one of the fellow actors to join such a prestigious line of storytelling, it’s just really unbelievable for me.

And then also just for the character as a whole, I was definitely drawn to Ciprien because of his complex history and, you know, the demons that he’s also facing within himself, having this particular power where he can touch innate objects and people and feel and see things from their past and how he’s trying to obviously control that new found power. But, you know, is it to his own detriment? Has he gotten a grasp of it? And if not, what is he hiding from or what is he running away from? So those are some of the questions that I’m looking forward to have explained and really hammered out within this season. And hopefully for many more seasons to come.

For all the people that haven’t watched the premiere yet, how would you describe Mayfair Witches if you had just 3 words?

Sensual. Mystic. Alluring

Ciprien is a character that’s been written exclusively for the show. It’s like a combination of two characters from the books. What can you tease about him? What can people expect from this character and his arc?

I think what you will expect is to find a character that is governed by rules and, you know, believes what people show him and when, I think, those things are crossed where you know, the people that he looks up to. End up not being the people that he said who they say they are. It now becomes a moral question for for sepian as to whether or not he should continue to believe. Who these people say they are. Or to move. According to the instincts that he now has within himself, you know, to decide what is right or wrong. So just seeing a a very calculated individual and how, in a world of perfection, disruption occurs and how he has to mitigate and find and figure his way out through that chaos.

If you had the chance to play another character on the show, apart from Cyprian, a character that you love or you find really fun to play, which one would it be and why?

Oh, I think I’ll still stick with Ciprien. The ability to use your gift as something to figure out what people, who people are, what’s happening in their life, like, I want to see what happens when Ciprien fully embraces his powers – You know, does he become an advocate for good or for evil? and how much of his past will influence the direction or the choices that he makes moving forward? You know, is it for the for the betterment of humanity or is it for selfish gains? So absolutely I will stick with with Ciprien because the clubs are kind of cool.
