EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Star Joanna Fyllidou Previews Uptv’s Discovering Love!

Discovering Love will premiere on Uptv on June 23th. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with star Joanna Fyllidou (stage name of actress Ioanna Triantafyllidou), who portrays Delia, about her experience on Uptv’s Discovering Love and a lot more.

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Discovering Love?

Delia is the receptionist at the hotel our main characters stay at, on the island. She is a very friendly and cheerful person, who really wants to help them with their quest. Growing up on a touristic Greek island, she is familiar with foreigners and even though she is a professional, she connects with her guests in a very sweet way.

What initially attracted you to your role in Discovering Love?

It’s always nice when an international production is interested in filming in your country and show the beauties of it while telling a story. My character does not discover love in this movie but is very willing to help others do! She’s there for everyone. With a smiling face, hopeful that things will always work out. And we need that. Both in storytelling as well as in life. We need to be like this, to surround ourselves with people like this. To remain positive in a world that’s filled with pain and suffering right now.

What do you think makes this movie so special and captivating?

Love, adventure, summer in Greece… what more could someone ask for? Jokes aside though, romantic comedies always have a big and diverse audience. Maybe because everyone wants to fall in love? Or watch people falling in love? Especially when love comes unexpectedly like the way it happens in this movie. In my opinion, love keeps you motivated. Add the adventure and a beautiful scenery, such as Kefalonia island, and I’m sure the audience will be captivated from the beginning till the end!

What do you hope audiences take away from watching Discovering Love?

To quote C.P. Cavafy, a famous Greek poet:

“As you set out for Ithaka

hope your road is a long one,

full of adventure, full of discovery.”

For him, Ithaca (another beautiful Greek island) is our life goals, the destination we believe we are meant to reach. But what matters most is the journey and what that may bring and how it will make us richer inside.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

My scenes were mostly with Liliana Tandon, Cheri Oteri, Louis Mandylor and Tim Rogan. They are such a talented and funny and creative group of people along with the director Kaila York! They love what they do and want to have fun while doing it. I had a blast working with each and every one of them in front and behind the cameras. And I really appreciate how welcoming they all were as they had been filming for a while before I started filming and they had already bonded. But I felt part of the group from the very first moment.

What can you tease about your character Journey?

To be honest, I believe the funniest story about my character’s journey is a backstage and literal one. Most of the filming was actually done in Greece, all the outdoor scenes etc but my scenes were interior scenes at the hotel and the hotel set was in L.A. So, I had to travel all the way from Greece to the U.S. in order to film my scenes that supposedly happened in Greece!

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Discovering Love?

I remember the last day of filming. We were filming in Topanga, at a house with a gorgeous garden on top of the mountain. It was a night shoot but we still got to see one the most beautiful sunsets. And then it all just turned into a party!

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

From my recent projects, I would have to mention “Nexting”, a short film I wrote and played in. Even though I’ve always enjoyed writing, it was the first time I decided to make it happen instead of saving the script as a file. As an actor, my job had always been to give life to a character and tell a story written by someone else. It was the first time I created something from scratch. It was very emotional for me to have a great team of actors, as well as Karina Logothetis, the director, and the crew that believed in my story and put all their talent and love in it. The film had a wonderful run in festivals and my excitement whenever we were selected and even more when we were awarded was indescribable!

Going back, one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had was performing at the ancient theater of Epidaurus, one of if not the most impressive theater in the world with a capacity of 15.000 people and a theatrical history since the 4th century BC. It was one of my first professional projects and I was part of the chorus in Lysistrata by Aristophanes. I remember how my legs were shaking. I was completely in awe!

But in general, I’ve been fortunate enough to have gained great experiences and meeting wonderful people while doing the thing I love most both on stage and on screen.

At Survived the Shows, we are big fans of Christmas rom-coms. What is your all-time favorite?

I’m sure a lot of people have mentioned this before me but when it comes to Christmas rom-com, “Love actually” is the one that comes to my mind.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

I am currently in Greece, rehearsing for a national tour with the play “8 women” by Robert Thomas.

As for TV, we still have a few days of filming the Greek version of Yargi (Family Secrets), a Turkish Tv show that won the International Emmy Award this year.

And I’m very excited to see what the future holds!

Discovering Love” with Joanna Fyllidou will premiere on March 17th on Uptv.
