Aubrey Reynolds and Samuel Whitten star in the new Great American Family Christmas movie Santa, Maybe, premiering November 18 as a part of the Great American Christmas line-up. We at Survived The Shows had the incredible chance to discuss the movie with star Sam Whitten, who stars as Glenn, and his experience on it. Check out the full interview below!

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Santa, Maybe?

SAM WHITTEN: My character, Glenn, was a reeeal sweetheart in HS. Just kidding, he was pretty awful. He tortured Lila. He probably had a crush on her and expressed it in the worst way possible. Ha ha ha. After HS he moved onto bigger and better things and through life, being humbled, hurt, loss and his parents needing more of hiim. He realized what was important. So he came back home to the unexpected. Lila. And maybe a happiness that he was looking for but had not  found just yet.

What initially attracted you to your role in Santa, Maybe?

SAM WHITTEN: What attracted me to Glenn and Santa Maybe was the humanity behind Glenn. The fact that he made mistakes and he changed, he grew, he became a better person. Which is something, I think, we all strive for as we get older. I just want to be a better person every day, someone others can count on, to be able to help others more. And in all that happiness seems to come. I see that in Glenn’s journey. I love it. I also have wanted to work with Brian, Brittany and John for a long time now. And they are amazing to work with. Along with all the cast and crew.

What do you think makes the romance in the movie so special and captivating?

SAM WHITTEN: What makes the romance special and captivating is the growth of both Lila and Glenn. Both have to admit mistakes and that they were wrong, ha ha ha, which is NEVER easy. Then be open to change, open to other possibilities, open to love. After being through hurt, pain, rejection, and humiliation, that is an impossible task. They both dare to change and be open. It’s beautiful.

What do you hope audiences take away from watching Santa, Maybe?

SAM WHITTEN: I’d love the audience to take away that people can change for the better. Even though we’ve all been hurt,  it’s important to stay open to love and to take chances on it. That we are all human and make mistakes but anything is possible. Nothing can stop love. I know, I’m cheesy. I’m a romantic.  I personally found love late in life and I’m so very grateful for all the pain and hurt and mistakes. It made me the man I am therefore put me in the situation to meet my soulmate. My wife Deana. And my other soulmates, my dogs, Duncan and Charlie. All of them. The loves of my life.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

SAM WHITTEN: The cast was amazing. Aubrey is so special. She’s talented, beautiful, hilarious, she’s got a great heart and best of all she’s an amazing person. I adored working with her.  Golden, who played my assistant, is one of the funniest and most lighthearted people I’ve ever met. He always had the best attitude, even when it was -1 degrees Fahrenheit, Golden always had a smile on his face. . Tito, who played Tobias is so talented and quick, his laugh was contagious and always had the right things to say at the right time. Love him. And Shona, who played Marie, was the light of the  cast. Everywhere she went, energy flowed and was there. She would move the room when she walked in. She’s so talented and a blessing to be around.

What can you tease about your character’s journey?

SAM WHITTEN: What can I tease about Glenn. He might come off as put together and not caring, especially in his past. But he’s a romantic and he’s creative. More so than one might think. He goes pretty far to impress Lila and is really thoughtful in his gifts to her. He’s a good man at heart even though he can come off as rude or unkind. He’s very caring. You just have to look past the façade.

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Santa, Maybe?

SAM WHITTEN: I had three favorite scenes in the film. The first was a moment I had with my Mom. I was fixing the sink and having a heart to heart conversation her. That just hits so close to home for me and my mom and the conversations we would have. It was very real for me. The Second was between me and my dad while he was trying to teach me to crochet. I was getting advice from him butchering the crocheting. It was hilarious. I’m a terrible crocheter, if that’s a word. The last and most favorite of mine was when Lila and I were on the theatre stage eating together. We connected and I felt it. It was a beautiful moment with all the feelings. Loved every minute.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while filming Santa, Maybe and how you overcame them?

SAM WHITTEN: The main challenge I faced while filming Santa Maybe was honestly, the weather. I’m from South Texas. We don’t get snow or cold like that. It was absolutely freezing while filming. No matter where we were it was so cold. Our last night was an overnight shoot on an ice rink. I nearly froze to death. Ha ha ha I don’t do cold well.

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

SAM WHITTEN: Some of the memorable films I have worked on are “The Whistle Blower”, with Rachel Weiz. We shot that in Romania. I had a small part but it was a really intense film and scene we shot. The next would be The episode I shot on Army Wives. Gina Rodriguez play my wife. It was all incredible intense material. She was amazing. I got to shoot a military film. That was a blast, “Mirage at Zabul Province”.  And lastly we just wrapped “Beauty and the Billionaire: Bali”. That was with Brittany and Brian who also made “Santa Maybe” It was fun to work with them again and it was in Bali. So that was amazing.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

SAM WHITTEN: What’s Next?? “The interrogation of Ike Tully”. We will see who’s going to be interrogating and who’s going to do the interrogation. We will see….
