EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Markian Tarasiuk Previews UPtv's Mistletoe Connection!

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Mistletoe Connection?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: I play Mark Goodwin – a local real estate investor who tries to convince our lead character, Kate Snow, to sell her property right in the middle of the holiday season. But! I’m a good guy who loves Christmas!! Mark is charming and charismatic and always looks out for his clients… but comes into conflict with his job and his romantic life. It’s a tough balance!

What initially attracted you to your role in Mistletoe Connection?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: It’s what I would define as a really classic Christmas movie. I loved growing up watching movies that had the classic conflict with the main characters when it comes to the work/life balance. It also poses the question of what ends people will go to for love/family vs career. The holidays and Christmas season should bring out the best in all of us, and that’s what’s reflected in this movie. It’s a perfect flm to get the popcorn and hot chocolate out!

What do you think makes the romance in the movie so special and captivating?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: I think it’s the chemistry that Jessica Sipos and I found during our filming. It’s not often you create a best friend out of a movie process, but Jess is someone that I know I’ll be friends with for a long time  – and that kinship is translated on screen. So hopefully watching us fall in love in Mistletoe Connection is as enjoyable as it was to shoot!

What do you hope audiences take away from watching Mistletoe Connection?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: Mine is a simple answer for this one: a sense of warmth and comfort. When I watch my favourite Christmas films every year, that’s what it makes me feel. There’s nothing better than a feel good Christmas movie to watch leading up to the gatherings with friends and family. Hopefully this movie brings you right into that holiday spirit.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: I mentioned the great working relationship Jessica and I had, but across the board it was a joy. This was an all local cast of Vancouver actors who were just a pleasure to work with. It was a small cast and crew, but that gives you the opportunity to get to know everyone better during the process and helps with the finished product – if you had fun during the shoot, that’s always reflected in the movie.

What can you tease about your character’s journey?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: A guy trying not to be Scrooge.

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Mistletoe Connection?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: There’s a scene where Mark and Kate share sandwiches. If you know anything about eating during filming, it’s a really hard thing to do because of continuity but also because of how many times you have to take a bite of the sandwich. It’s over and over. After a while, the sandwich starts to “not taste as good,” and we started having difficulty. Jess and I had to really focus to cover our laughter after the 5th take of watching eachother take a bite we knew the other really didn’t want to do.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while filming Mistletoe Connection and how you overcame them?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: We filmed during the heatwave in July in Vancouver. So many scenes I’m wearing a suit and a winter jacket in 35 degree (or 95 fahrenheit) weather. I was so hot and was a sweaty mess under my jacket – even though you can’t tell on my face. Makeup and hair worked wonders through the heat. But boy, did I have to run inside to the airconditioning between takes.

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: My most memorable was probably my first movie ever – “Bunks” for DisneyXD. It stands out because it was my first film role, but it was one of the best experiences as well too. I got to be at a summer camp all summer and get intense zombie makeup done for it. I used my physical theatre training to walk like a zombie and just had so much fun and freedom with the role. Any chance I have to do special effects makeup – those experiences stand out because they don’t come around often.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

MARKIAN TARASIUK: I’m currently in production for my first feature film that I’m directing! I can’t really talk about it, other than it’s a horror movie. It’s going to be pretty wild, so if you want to follow along my journey, give me a follow on my instagram @markataras
