Garcelle Beauvais and Iyana Halley will star in “Black Girl Missing” a new, original movie which premiered Saturday, March 4 at 8 p.m. on Lifetime Network. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Iyana Halley, who plays Lauren, about her experience in the making of the movie and the main challenges she experienced. Check out the full interview in the video below!

What’s the main element in Lauren’s character and the movie in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join Black Girl Missing?

IYANA HALLEY: Well, for me, I think I wanted to definitely be a part of a project like this that had such an important message. I think that it’s important to use my platform to help spread awareness, and this is a story that happens way too often, that people need to know about. So that’s what definitely drew me to being a part of this amazing cast and story.

Where are you and Lauren most similar and where most different as human beings?

In terms of similarities with the character, she’s younger than I am in real life, but I’ve definitely been like a teenager who has gone through it in school and felt a certain type of way and expressed that as well. I just think she acted on it differently than I, of course, would have. But that’s some of the things that are similar. And also she’s a sweet girl. She has like a close relationship with her sibling – I have a sibling as well that I am close to, and you kind of just want to like stick around to make sure your sibling is OK, but you’re also sometimes going through things.

So, in ways that we are different, again, the things that she acted on, I wouldn’t probabl y meet someone online and stuff like that, but I know that happens all of the time. But Lauren and I, she was definitely a relatable character for sure.

How would you describe Black Girl Missing in just 3 words?

Informative, powerful and needed

What’s been the biggest challenge for you in portraying Lauren?

For me, the biggest challenge waslike digging deep and really having to have that emotional barrier or so with my mom, of course, played by Miss Garcelle [Beauvais]. That was difficult. I mean, first of all, she’s so sweet, so I really had to act like we had this relationship that wasn’t the best, which was definitely challenging. And then even at the end – I can’t spoil it for you guys, but yeah, I’ll say that part. You guys got to see the ending to see what happens.

If you could choose any other character from Black Girl Missing, apart from Lauren, that you would have loved to play, which one would it be and why?

It would probably be my sister’s character. She definitely played a really important part in the story, just in terms of, like even our relationship and how both she and my mom, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to help find Lauren. So her character and her role was very, very important. So if I could switch roles, it’d probably be that one.
