EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Heather Hawthorn Doyle Previews Hallmark’s A Scottish Love Scheme!

Can you tell us a bit about the storyline of “A Scottish Love Scheme”?

Lily (Erica Durance) travels to Scotland with her mom Cait (Jo Cameron Brown)  to visit her mom’s childhood best friend Mairi (Juliet Cadzow) where she reconnects with Mairi’s oldest son Logan (Jordan Campbell) while helping him and his brothers Rory (James Mackenzie) and Caleb (Jack Stewart) with their whisky business, which is what Cait and Mairi had planned for all along. But things take a turn when Lily abruptly finds out a secret everyone was keeping from her about her mom.

What initially attracted you to the story in “A Scottish Love Scheme”?

When I first read the script and saw the ‘scheming granny’ storyline I was instantly captivated. These lifelong best friends in their 70’s was just a joyful relationship to explore. Add to that that it was always going to be filmed exclusively in Scotland and I was in!

What do you think makes the romance in the movie so special and captivating?

Great question. What is special about Lily and Logan coming together is their sweetness. This relationship takes its time. Lily is recently divorced and although Logan has long been a widower he has a 10 year old son (excellently played by Bradley Connell) and he’s running his families whisky distillery business so he just hasn’t had time to consider dating. But slowly as Logan and Lily work together their friendship turns to something more, and their first kiss (spoiler alert) in so beautiful and unexpected really. The moment after the kiss is so sweet and compelling too that you’re really rooting for these two.

What do you hope audiences take away from watching “A Scottish Love Scheme”?

I hope audiences walk away thinking about family relationships. And how love can come again.  And charmed by how beautiful Scotland is.

What can you tease about the characters Journey?

Lily’s journey is one of discovery and joy even when there’s sorrow. Logan’s journey has him embracing family and future even more than ever before.

What was your favorite scene or moment while directing “A Scottish Love Scheme”?

There were so many great moments while filming this movie! The last scenes at the beach and all the other places were so fun to do. And the scene at the restaurant where (spoiler alert) Lily and Logan dance – was beautiful and because we were running out of our shooting day time was super rushed, but it’s a beautiful scene and the singer songwriter Ross Leighton performing “Love in the Air” acoustically with just his guitar was magical.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

2024 is going to be so fun! There are two projects I’m really excited about – one is a very funny romantic comedy – love that it’s leaning into the comedy – and the other is a sequel to a mystery we shot earlier. I’m hoping both of those projects get the Greenlight this year.

‘A Scottish Love Scheme’ direct by Heather Hawthorn Doyle will premiere on Saturday, January 13th on Hallmark Channel.
