EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Colton Royce Breaks Down His Experience on Lifetime’s Obsessed to Death!

Lifetime Movie Network ‘s thriller movie “Obsessed to Death”, is all set to premiere on the channel on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 8/7c. We at Survived The Shows had the chance to chat via email with actor Colton Royce, who plays Austin, about his experience on Lifetime’s Obsessed to Death and his career in general. Check out the full interview below!

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Obsessed to Death?

COLTON ROYCE: I play Austin, who is Summer Rays’ boyfriend. Austin is the ultimate self-centered “player’s player” and the type of guy who posts selfies on this Instagram blowing kisses to his followers and who loves himself more than anyone else.  He isn’t afraid of ghosting someone- actually it’s his specialty.

What initially attracted you to your role in “Obsessed to Death”?

COLTON ROYCE: The fact that it was a thriller drew me to the role….and I love thrillers!  But, even more appealing was that I knew this was going to be directed by Stefan Brogren, who I have been a fan of since his days in Degrassi.  I knew I had to be a part of this.  Fun story – I auditioned for back in 2013 but it didnt go my way.

What do you think makes the action in the movie so special and captivating?

COLTON ROYCE: The way it was shot and the vision that Stefan had for it came together so perfectly for this film.  Unlike many thrillers, there is so much more than just action – these characters are not surface, but are so relatable and written so well that when they are put into tough situations that bring out their survival instincts and force them to adapt.

What do you hope audiences take away from watching “Obsessed to Death”?

COLTON ROYCE: I hope audiences see this as beyond as there are some fantastic comedic moments as well, as the film pokes at  crazy social expectations we have in our current society.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

COLTON ROYCE: Working with this cast was awesome everyone was so nice and just ready to have a good time, we all knew this movie was going to be special, so everyone was committed to their roles. I had been a huge fan of Holland Roden since her days in the show Teen Wolf – a show that I was a fan of in my high school days- so getting to work with Holland for me was a dream come true. Her talent and personality is admirable  and I loved every minute of working with her. Kathryn Kohut who plays Summer Ray was fantastic and it’s rare that I get along with a cast mate right away, but we instantly connected on the same level which helped our performances together and we were able to bring the best out of each other.

What can you tease about your character’s journey?

COLTON ROYCE: Austin might be feeling like he’s found the one, but his past might not let him.

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming “Obsessed to Death”?

COLTON ROYCE: My favorite scene in the movie was when Austin gets confronted by his past in a way that he wasn’t expecting at all. Seeing someone have to play it cool while burning with rage on the inside is often quite enjoyable to watch.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while filming “Obsessed to Death” and how you overcame them?

COLTON ROYCE: The main challenge I faced (other than having to act in the freezing cold!) was at times I felt nervous by Holland, especially at the beginning.  Acting alongside someone I grew up watching as a teen was a bit intimidating! Ofcourse,  I overcame this by trusting myself as an actor and the work I put in over the last decade that got me here in the first place. As an actor, you never want to suppress your nerves but find a way to redirect that energy in a more useful way. So, for me I used that energy toward how my character was feeling in those moments.

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

COLTON ROYCE: One of the most memorable projects I’ve worked on was Twisted Neighbor. I got to work with Kathryn and Stefan Brogren for a second time, it’s a dream to be able to work with the same people again on different projects. Kathryn and I joke that we are going to be those actors who work together multiple times throughout their careers. Which I low-key hope becomes true. Another memorable project I’ve worked on was Ice Road Stalker, only because we really filmed on an ice road at -30 degrees. And acting in -30-degree weather was the ultimate challenge. I must mention that some of my favorite projects I’ve worked on have yet to be released.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

COLTON ROYCE: You can catch me in the Holiday film Our Christmas Wedding premiering November 5th on Great American Family. I also have a few new projects coming out later this year and early 2024 that I’m excited about.  I’m looking forward to be able to show you all a different side of me as an actor!

Colton Royce is represented by Hero Artist.
