Amber Marshall and Ben Mehl star in My Christmas Guide, a new, original movie premiering November 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT as part of the Countdown to Christmas movie line-up on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. We at Survived The Shows had the chance to chat with star Ben Mehl to discuss the movie and his experience in it. Check out the full interview in the video below!

What initially attracted you to the role of My Christmas Guide?

BEN MEHL: Well, at one point somebody calls him extremely handsome and I thought, ‘oh, well, yeah, that’s great. I’ll do that’. No, I joke because I’ve never really thought of myself that way. It was fun to to see myself in that light. Another thing that really attracted me to the role was the opportunity to represent as somebody who is legally blind. I am not completely blind, I have Stargardt’s disease, which is a form of macular degeneration. So I have no central vision, but I have all my peripheral vision. Nevertheless, I consider myself a member of the low vision community and even though I am a very privileged member of that community to be able to represent a character who has vision loss, I have some experience and understanding that I can bring to that. So that definitely attracted me to to the role.

What do you hope the audience takes away from My Christmas Guide?

BEN MEHL: You know, one thing that I hope audiences take away that that I heard somebody talking about was just a a glimpse into the experience of somebody with vision loss. For instance, there’s a scene where I’m learning how to cross the street with my guide dog, Max, and I mentioned how I had a close call at this intersection once because of an electric car. And you know that not hearing that sound of the engine is a big deal when you can’t see.

So I hearing somebody else pick up on that and thinking like, oh, I never would have thought of that. nd just kind of raising a little bit the level of people’s understanding and awareness of what some, some of us live with and just, you know, an increase of empathy for other people’s conditions. And this everybody has something that they are dealing with in their life. So I hope that this movie more generally as well can remind us to, you know, be aware, be aware of what other people might be going through, put yourself into other people’s shoes.

What’s been your favourite scenes or moments on My Christmas Guide?

BEN MEHL: There were a few. There’s this character Chad and he’s like a terrible boyfriend for Peyton. And there’s a moment where it kind of comes to a head where I’m able to say something that is very honest to Chad, and that’s a very enjoyable moment. But also, I mean all of my scenes with Amber, I had a great time because I am a father to two young daughters and I really enjoyed bringing that understanding and experience of mine to my scenes.

With Annie, my daughter in the movie, there are moments where she’ll say something that surprises me and I know what it’s like when when your child says something that is unexpected. But then also there’s a kind of pride in their understanding of what they’re seeing, and then there’s also the need to like sort of save face and remain the parental figure in that relationship. So the complexity of those moments with your child, I really enjoyed playing with Ava. She was just so much fun to act.
