Barry Corbin Exclusive Interview

How did you approach the challenge of portraying such a pivotal character from a 2000s TV series like Coach Whitey Durham?

Barry Corbin: When they offered me the part, I’ve never seen a basketball game. So I had to do a quick, quick study on what coaches do, but it was it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed doing that one very much and we’ve got a good fan base. They have on their conventions every year. I enjoy it. They they us like The Beatles.

Did you expect the character to resonate with audiences in the way that it did? Why do you think it struck a chord with people?

Corbin: I was surprised that the coach who was sort of peripheral character in the beginning, he became sort of the conscience of the show. He became kind of a a mentor and a very important piece of the show in the first few seasons when the kids where in high school.

Among all the roles you’ve had the chance to play throughout your career, is there any particular role you’re most fond of?

Corbin: Well, let’s see. The longest one I ever played was in the Northern Exposure in that I played the astronaut, the retired astronaut. In Northern Exposure I started to identify with that character quite a bit because I played him over a period of about five years. So the character became more me.
