EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Aubrey Reynolds Previews GAC’s Santa, Maybe!

Aubrey Reynolds and Samuel Whitten star in the new Great American Family Christmas movie Santa, Maybe, premiering November 18 as a part of the Great American Christmas line-up. We at Survived The Shows had the incredible chance to discuss the movie with star Aubrey Reynolds, who stars as Lila, and his experience on it. Check out the full interview below!

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Santa, Maybe?

AUBREY REYNOLDS: Lila manages a theatre, and loves making sure everything runs smoothly.
Sometimes she spends a little too much time micro-managing everything at the theatre. When Glenn is re-introduced into her life, her world is turned upside down!

What initially attracted you to your role in Santa, Maybe?

So many things! I have always been a huge fan of theatre. I loved the setting: that we got to shoot in a gorgeous old theatre in Utah, and I loved the romance between leads. I have also worked with this director and team before and they are AMAZING! Anytime I can work with good people, I jump at the chance!

What do you think makes the romance in the movie so special and captivating?

I think the romantic journey of Glenn winning Lila over is slow and really earned! Nothing is too fast or sudden. They’re building a trust that lasts, not just a butterflies-in-your-stomach kind of romance. I think that’s what’s so special about it!

What do you hope audiences take away from watching Santa, Maybe?

I know it sounds cliche, but this movie is really about not judging a book by it’s cover… or rather, the cover you thought you knew so well. People are complicated, and true love can only be found when you let your guard down and let people show you who they really are.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

It was fabulous! Shona, who plays Marie, my best friend, is truly like having a best friend around all the time. And don’t let the character of Glenn fool you – Sam is actually the sweetest person you’ll meet! We had a wonderful time!

What can you tease about your character’s journey?

Lila learns a lot about herself as she learns to embrace change. She learns that some of the best things in life are found when you stop trying to control everything!

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Santa, Maybe?

There’s this small scene in the film where Glenn and Lila are sharing thanksgiving leftovers on an empty stage- they have the theatre all to themselves. This is one of the first scenes where Lila sees Glenn in a different light, and opens herself to the possibility that he has changed for the better. It’s a cute and intimate scene, and it was really fun to film, finding bits of nuance between the characters for that first time.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while filming Santa, Maybe and how you overcame them?

One of the most difficult days was when we were filming the ice skating scene – it was literally zero degrees (Fahrenheit) outside, and everyone was so cold! Also, it was important to the story that I didn’t wear gloves in the scene, so, to keep my hands from freezing, I had to skate with my hands in my pockets. I don’t know if you’ve tried ice skating with your hands glued in your pockets, but it does not have the most graceful outcome!

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

I have had some amazing experiences! Some of my favorites have been ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ – where I got to play a 1920s Jazz singer with a beautiful story arc, ‘Love’s Portrait’ – where I got to learn sign language and shoot on location in Ireland, and ‘Frenzy’ – where I got to shoot in the ocean on location in Thailand.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

I’m really excited about another romance coming out next year, that was shot
on location in England! It has a time travel element, and I think romance fans are
really going to love it. =)
