Margie Mays and Alex Trumble star in the brand new rom-com movie Lucky Hearts, premiering Sunday, May 28 at 7 PM on UPtv. We at Survived The Shows had the incredible pleasure to chat with Alex Trumble ahead of the premiere to discuss his experience in the movie and preview what fans can expect. Check out the full interview in the video below!

What’s been the main element in Simon’s character and the movie in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join this project?

ALEX TRUMBLE: I worked with the director John Merlinski a few times – we had worked on 3 thrillers in the past. So him and the casting director, Paul, already called me up and said, ‘Hey, do you want to do a comedy about this guy Simon who meets a girl who owns her own makeup company?’. It’s a bespoke makeup company. I play Simon and he’s an investment banker. He’s really like about the numbers and getting the bottom line down. What he wants more than anything at the start of the movie is to find a new business that he can show to his boss, played by Brian Burns, and really solidify his position in the company and get a promotion. So those are his intentions when the movie starts and then things get complicated when the hearts gets involved.

To for all the fans that are looking forward to watching Lucky Hearts, how would you describe the movie if you had just like 3 words or a sentence?

Lucky Hearts is a fun ride that has a little bit of conflict in the middle to kind of keep everybody interested on their toes.

Considering how UPtv and all these movies always feature some relatable storylines for the audience as well, is there any particular feature in Simon’s character that you can relate to on a personal level?

Well, I have a background in the restaurant business. I’ve been in the restaurant business in Los Angeles for over 10 years and I’ve been opening and operating stuff and really had my business hat on for a long time. Simon is definitely like a very sharp business guy and about the numbers and making sure that the business that he’s going to get involved in is a valuable one – so in that way I’m a lot like Simon. He is also very organized, and I would say – in that way – I am perhaps not as much like Simon, as I tend to live in a little bit of chaos but makes it fun too.

On the acting level instead, what’s been the biggest challenge you experienced in portraying Simon?

Simon’s character is very focused on the minute details. In my own personal life, instead, I think I view more of a big picture and try to move things forward in that kind of way. Simon was kind of like the penny pincher and that’s not really who I am. So that was the stretch for me in playing the character. Anyway, I was more like Simon definitely than not like him. A lot of people like to put their careers first, especially now in this day and age, and a lot of people ignore their personal life and it just kind of they get hit with it blindsidedly. That’s a story that I can definitely relate to and I’ve lived that path. So that was the easy, the way that I was able to plug into the character.

How was it like for you to work with Margie Mays and build this relationship both on screen and off screen with her?

We’ve remained great friends since filming the movie. Margie [Mays], she has just such an open and bubbly and fun personality that I felt like I had to match that. But also, it was easy. There wasn’t like layers I had to strip down to figure out who she was. She was just like ready to play and ready to go, and just brought a lot of fun to the project. She was a great #1, great lead.

If you could choose any other character from the movie apart from Simon that you would have loved to play if you could, which one would it be and why?

I would have loved to have played the character that Brian played, my boss. I’m probably not quite old enough to play that character. But just seeing how his name was Verner and what Brian did with Verner and how much fun he had playing that role. I would have loved to, you know – he did such a good job in the movie that it made me want to do that part as well. I think that’s like a testament to Brian and his skills.

And also, James’ character Patty, the dad, was just like such a big, gregarious heartkind of character too. I mean, it’s hard to choose because James’ character and I have a background in the restaurant business and James played the owner of a struggling restaurant. When James was talking about how hard keeping the business alive was and all the heart that you put into a restaurant. Which is not necessarily a business that makes a lot of money, but a business that rewards you with relationships and regulars. The character he played had all those things and was really operating the restaurant out of the labor of love. That was another character that really was familiar to me and helped me step into the world sort of seamlessly.
